Lance sees it almost as soon as Adhemar voices the alert, and he watches the spirit drift through the woods toward them, with the same sense of purpose as the ones in the village. It passes them, then pauses.

Then it turns, coming back the way it came, passing through the backs of anyone who didn't think to turn around and watch it; Lance is one such person, and he gives the telltale gasp of dismay as the spirit overtakes them and glides in front.
